Legal/Labor Issues

The final decision for Brother Crowe’s arbitration came back and he will be reinstated. His termination will be reduced to a 30 suspension. Brother Crowe will receive back pay. There has not been a date set for when Brother Crowe will return to work.

Brother Bergman advised there is ongoing discussion on the tattoo policy with management. The policy would prohibit tattoos from the neck up. It would also limit tattoos that would be visible on the arms.

Deputy Chief Plummer did call Brother Bergman and acknowledged that management does need to notify the FOP of any policy changes.

Brother Bergman advised there are other policies in the department that are being proposed. One such policy would make it mandatory that there would be no recording of Sheriff’s office employees without their knowledge. Individuals must notify the other party that they are being taped. Another policy deals with the use of cell phones while on-duty. There is an increased concern with cell phone use in public. There has already been a policy in the courts that prohibits the use of cell phones while on-duty unless it is for business use. The policy may be extended to road patrol deputies as well.

Brother Bergman advised that he does hope to see some changes with new Sheriff taking office.

New Business:

Brother Bergman advised the economic crisis continues and that the projections for 2009 look to be worse than 2008. It is unknown what will be cut and where the cuts will be made.

Old Business:

Brother Campbell advised that ticket sales for the gun raffle are still ongoing. There is a gun show this weekend, June 7 and 8, and Brother Campbell will need help selling tickets there. Brother Campbell stated that collectively, the FOP has sold at least $3200 in tickets and that we are close to breaking even. Brother Campbell stated many are holding out until closer to the drawing to buy tickets. Peabody’s has been handing out tickets to other agencies to sell.

Brother Bergman advised that there will be additional coins available from Dayton Montgomery Memorial Ceremony. If anyone is interested, please contact Brother Bergman.

Chaplain’s Report

Brother Ridgeway would like to thank all who helped with memorial ceremony that was held prior to the May meeting.

Brother Ridgeway stated that thank you cards were received from Randy Richter’s sisters for all that was done for the memorial ceremony. A thank you letter was also received from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for the donation on behalf of Brother Bowling’s daughter.

Brother Ridgeway advised that Brother Wilson’s mother passed away. Flowers were sent on behalf of the FOP and Brother Ridgeway will get a bible to Brother Wilson.

Brother Ridgeway reported that Brother James Daughtery has been off work due to ongoing health problems. Brother Daugherty has missed so many days of work that he is currently off the payroll. The benevolent fund is helping out. Brother Ridgeway stated that Brother Daugherty is hoping to be off for just two more weeks then he will be back to work and back on payroll.

The cost would be covered in the $800 that was allotted to the social committee last year as a result of a motion. Brother Statzer would make flyers for the events and distribute them.
