Legal/Labor Issues Brother Bergman wanted to address any rumors that may be going around in regard to the screening committee. The screening committee will not start screening potential candidates for Sheriff or any other local office that may be seeking endorsement of the FOP until the respective parties have made their final decision on which candidate to endorse. The committee has started compiling questions for a questionnaire and for oral interviews. If any member has any questions that they would like the committee to bring to the candidates, please forward them to Brother Bergman. Brother Bergman advised that there is continued discussion of a proposed tattoo policy that would restrict members on where they would be able to have a tattoo placed on their body. Discussion will continue.

For the Good of the Order Brother Bergman advised that the FOP Spring Conference and the OLC Conference were recently held and there was a lot of discussion about bills that are being lobbied in the State House and Senate by the FOP. Brother Bergman wanted to point out that the FOP is the only labor union that is actively fighting for its members. Some members still talk about switching to the OPBA without knowing how diligently the FOP fights for its members. Brother Statzer mentioned two Senate Bills that have been successful. Senate Bill 6, which deals with personal information on county internet websites, was signed into law on May 6. Employees would be allowed to request that their address be redacted from any county internet site for a filing fee. The only exception would be the county auditor’s office. Instead of having the employees address redacted, the employee would have to pay $0.50 and sign an affidavit and only their initials would be listed on the internet and not their full name. The other bill mentioned was Senate Bill 267 which deals with the PERS LE conversion. The bill would allow members to purchase up to 5 yrs of their PERS and convert it to PERS LE prior to retirement. The bill has passed the Senate. Brother Gardiner advised that he was re-elected to the Member at Large position on the OLC board at the OLC Conference. Brother Gardiner will hold that position until the year 2012. The OLC would like to hold training, which would be provided by OLC representatives, at the lodge. Further information will be forthcoming.
