Legal/Labor Issues:

Brother Bergman reported there have been two news articles involving the Sheriff’s Office and the upcoming budget. Brother Bergman advised Deb Feldman, without the approval of the Sheriff, made reference to the Sheriff’s Office charging each township for all E.V. calls, property room storage, SWAT calls, ect.... The article advised this would save the Sheriff’s Office $1 million dollars by the end of 2010. The second article stated there would be a $13 million dollar deficit in the county which would equal to a $2.2 million dollar cut for the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff is still trying to work with the sergeants and civilians to freeze their contracts for one year.

Brother Bergman stated the County Commission has made statements to the Sheriff they would rather see the Sheriff’s Office run the jail and civil and not have any road deputies.

Brother Bergman reported there have been rumors that the City of Dayton has approached the Sheriff on taking over the business district downtown. The Sheriff and Chief Beal have been exchanging words about how to combat crime. There is no official word on whether anything will happen.

Brother Bergman stated Brother Donnie Williams has accepted a medical retirement. The Benevolent Fund has agreed to pay for the hotel rooms for Brother Williams’ family during their stay in Kansas.

Brother Statzer advised Brother Zurn wanted to decline the nomination for Trustee. Brother Statzer advised the Secretary’s position has to be filled by a full time Sheriff’s Office employee. Since Brother Sakal is not a Sheriff’s Office employee, he is not eligible to be nominated for the position of Secretary. Brother Statzer stated Brother Fannin is not eligible to be nominated for a position on the Board because he is currently not in good standing with the Lodge. Brother Statzer stated Brother Feehan is not eligible to be nominated for a position on the Board because he has not attended enough meetings this year. Brother Statzer stated once the new Board has been sworn in, they will get together and appoint individuals for the empty slots on the Lodge.
