The below article appeared in the summer edition of Ohio Lawyer.  It is explains the Wills for Heroes program offered by the Dayton Bar Association that provides free estate planning documents such as wills, living wills and power of attorney documents.  The Dayton Bar Ass. assistant executive director advised that the program is open to retired officers and that the next event is scheduled for September 19, 2009 in Washington Twp.  Read below for the details, contacts and links, including the questionnaire.

This is being circulated for the information of our membership.  Please pass this on to FOP members in active police service. Fraternally,

Dayton Bar Association:  Wills for Heros

Police officers, firefighters and EMTs put their lives at risk on a daily basis to protect our safety, health and well-being.  With this sobering thought in mind, it seems like common sense to provide these first responders with easy access to legal services for wills, living wills and power of attorney documents.  The Dayton Bar Association, with the help of Lexis Nexis and volunteers from the surrounding community, successfully implemented the national Wills fro Heros program in the greater Dayton area in 2008, with upcoming events scheduled for... September and October 2009.

The program gives emergency and law enforcement personnel a chance to meet with volunteer member attorneys, magistrates, paralegals and law students to plan for their families' futures in the event of tragedy.  Created shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Wills for Heros has provided more than 7,000 free estate planning documents and legal services to first responders in 10 different states.

For more information or to volunteer for an upcoming Dayton Bar Association Wills for Heros event, contact Chris Albrektson at (937) 222-7902 or calbrektson@daybar.org, or visit willsforheroes.org.

What is Wills For Heroes?
Wills For Heroes
programs provide free wills and other estate planning documents to first responders and their spouse or domestic partner. Qualified first responders include firefighters, police officers, paramedics, corrections and probation officers from federal, state, county, city and town departments and agencies.

How Do I Participate?
In advance of the Wills for Heroes event, participants download and complete an estate planning questionnaire (pdf file). Receiving the questionnaire ahead of time is an important step in this process because it allows participants to think through a number of important decisions and discuss them with their spouse, partner, or other trusted friends.

Upon arrival at the Wills for Heroes event, the first responder signs in and executes a disclaimer. The participant is assigned to an attorney who reviews the questionnaire and inputs the information from the questionnaire into a laptop loaded with HotDocsŪ document automation software by LexisNexis. The attorney reviews the draft estate planning documents with the first responder participant to insure that each person understands and agrees to what they are executing. Once finalized, the documents are signed, witnessed and notarized in a formal signing ceremony. On average, it takes about an hour to complete the estate planning documents. The Wills for Heroes program does not keep a copy of the participants documents or information.

Hi Everyone,

I haven't said anything to anybody about this until now because I wanted to wait until everything had been completed. We purchased a one bedroom home in the Outer Banks N.C. as an investment property.

Escrow finally closed this week and I thought I would let you know in case you're interested in renting.  It's available for weekends or on a weekly basis. Initially I will be handling bookings until I find an agent in the area to manage the property.

In order to offset the closing costs, weekends will cost approximately $50
(family and friends' rate) for three nights, and $100 for the week.  But, I can only give out these rates until April 1, 2005. It's a one bedroom high rise unit that overlooks the ocean, nestled among lush greens, and has a lovely ocean view from every window! I am taking reservations as early as next week.  Have a look and see the great luxury spot in Paradise!  Simply Breathtaking!

Attached is a photo, so let me know if you are interested.

Respectfully,

Lt. R. Elsner (Retired)

Dearest friends,

Eat your heart out and drool. Just kidding! I just bagged this beautiful thing about 750 clicks north west of here. You can see how happy I was. It is a beautiful Roe Deer Buck, which is hunted here in Europe in the spring.

Love you all, Tony Bayot, Spain
